ocean depths, mountain heights ( planetary geography)

new Color chart for surface maps not all maps are converted.

Links fixed when I added this to the blog.

Symbols on the Tantalow’s Island Group maps, that are on the map split edge, have been moved or shrunk slightly to prevent a large white border from showing on the maps. For exact locations of mountains, castles, etc on the map split, please use this link: Tantalow’s Island Group details which shows this group as one map.

The Outer Ocean, Inner Ocean and Sea of Ghanuu go down to 2 miles deep in a few places. Mostly they are zero to 4,500 feet deep. Some shoals are mapped, others are not. Shoals are shallow areas that vary in depth. Some places a rowboat would have a tough passage, others have enough water over them to float small ships. Tides will affect this…

Contour lines mark elevations of 200 feet or 1,000 feet per line of elevation. The map color chart shows the new elevation spreads as marked on the below link. Some hills and mountains are now taller than they were in my original campaign… I am slowly doing away with the contour lines and making sylized maps with the height ranges shown by the colors used in a color chart.

The Mountains of Death go as high as 20,000 feet. Rumors of heights of 30,000 feet have never been checked on.

The lakes on this continent are from 100 to 500 feet deep. A few are much deeper. Rumor has it that some lakes and ponds, within city walls, connect to the vast depths where the Dark Elves reside.

The Invisible River is mostly dry river bed. Some of the dry areas have water below the surface, some areas have no water below just a dry river bed. The deepest parts of the Invisible River are about 200 feet deep. The average river depth is 10 feet. This river has been known to drown unwary travelers by somehow diverting its waters.

The terrain on Crestar shows some action by glaciers, while land nearby to the glaciation doesn’t. The inhabitants don’t realize this is impossible, as Crestar is all they know.

The nations east of the Mountains of Death have few natural defenses, so any invasions via sea or land is a problem for them.

Most inhabited islands can survive with small populations hunting nothing but fish and growing a few food stuffs. The smaller islands must trade with others to survive. Larger islands have enough acerage they can maintain large populations with large crop yields, with fishing as a suppliment food during times of drought.

60 degress South latitude is at surface map row A: shown on map: AA

40 degress South latitude is at surface map row F: shown on map: JF.

20 degress South latitude is at surface map row K: shown on maps: GK and JK.

Zero degress latitude, the Equator, is at surface map row R, shown on map GR.

Yes, there are no jungles on the equator on Crestar, the jungles center on 20 degrees south latitude.

Don’t forget, South is at the top of the map, left side of the map is east, right is west, and the bottom of the map is North.

sample Area sizes:

I came up with the square milage by using a built-in tool in Campaign Cartographer. It takes mouse clicks along a coastline, nation border, etc. and after completing the area, a square milage is shown.

Braydont map area: 800 square miles

Dank Forest: map KE: 27,400 square miles ; map LE: 3,800 square miles ; for a total of: 31,200 square miles

Dtillan Orsti land area: 25 square miles

Grand Isle of Karenth: 12,500 square miles

Isle of Fools: on map LF: 2,700 square miles ; on map LG: 2,100 square miles ; for a total of: 4,800 square miles

Nalo Island: 10,000 square miles

Nomads: map LE: 19,000 square miles ; map ME: 27,500 square miles ; map LF: 7,500 square miles ; map MF: 8,030 square miles ; total of: 62,030 square miles

Trillolara: 46,000 square miles

Tantalow’s Island is about: 260,000 square miles ; Star Island is about: 14,700 square miles ; Spill Island is about: 9,800 square miles

each surface map covers: 185 miles by 234 miles; 43,290 square miles

Not all World Surface maps are done.
