Sometimes adventurers arrive to find not ruins but a high-walled castle with Orcs manning the walls.
Sometimes human ghosts are seen running southward away from burning buildings.
The adventurers go back to the hill dwarves, a few miles to the south, and ask about it. When they and the dwarves get back, they find just ruins.
